Ultraviolet Disinfection - Wastewater Disrupts organism reproduction Technology of choice for most WWTPs due to inherent safety advantages, simple operation Won’t work well if WW effluent is “cloudy” or excessive solids •Check effectiveness for industrial uses •Check for fixed film treatment •CSO – too dirty; not a good option
Sep 17, 2018·Today, UV disinfection is widely accepted for municipal wastewater disinfection around the world. UV is rapidly growing, given it’s a safe and cost-effective alternative over chemical disinfection. Also, it produces no disinfection byproducts or a chlorine residual, which is harmful to the environment.
Wastewater Technology Fact Sheet: Chlorine Disinfection Author: US EPA, OW, OWM, Water Permits Division Subject: Fact sheet on disinfection, one of the primary mechanisms for the inactivation or destruction of pathogenic organisms. Contains information on how to use chlorine as a disinfectant for municipal wastewater.

of disinfection are also complicated by the fact that disinfectant-injured organisms, through repair mechanisms, can reactivate to a limited extent both in light and dark. This reactivation, sometimes referred to as regrowth, is mostly reported in the case of UV disinfection.” 2 Chlorination “The history of wastewater disinfection is ...

“Attainment of the disinfection guidelines can only be achieved by the disinfection process, which, from a disease prevention standpoint, is the most important unit process in the wastewater treatment system.” 3. Disinfection of water and wastewater, primarily by chlorine, has played a large part in the reduction of waterborne diseases.

An ozone disinfection system strives for the maximum solubility of ozone in wastewater, as disinfection depends on the transfer of ozone to the wastewater. The amount of ozone that will dissolve in wastewater at a constant temperature is a function of the partial pressure of the gaseous ozone above the water or in the gas feed stream.

UV Water Disinfection for Wastewater Applications For large-scale wastewater disinfection operations, or small scale wastewater systems, UV treatment is a safe, environmentally-friendly, and cost-effective method. More and more wastewater treatment plants are adopting this method over other, chemical-based disinfection methods, such as chlorine gas.
